Handshake Apartment
1) The first image is a typical floor layout of a typical handshake building.
2) Mirroring and repeating buildings with this layout produces the worse possible situation for privacy.
3) Having the windows of habitable rooms (and the habitable rooms themselves) pinwheel around the intersections allows all large windows to face either blank wall or a bathroom window.
4) In the final layout for an improved handshake apartment, the deep side indents bring ventilation to the kitchens, while the corner indents allow windows to be positioned in a pinwheel arrangement but without change to the positions of the spaces inside.
5) The corner cutouts also allow for more light and air to enter in the first place. While the trees are unlikely, the A/C shelves in those cutouts could also include planters.
