Intersecting Shafts

This project was a collaboration with then sustainability consultant Bashar Al Shawa. The objective was to engineer a building from energy performance criteria alone and without recourse to any notions of architectural aesthetics or beauty. The building can be occupied in the conventional manner but its appearance, configuration and even its apartment layouts were secondary to the integrated performance of its building systems.

Each two apartments share a vertical ventilation shaft open top and bottom. Faster moving air draws air cooled by reed beds up through the shafts to ventilate the intersecting corridors and, in doing so, extract apartment air via the inner rooms.
