This apartment is based on Mosei Ginzburg's 1928 Type F that aimed at minimal building volume for apartment access. Staircases in such split-level entry apartments waste volume the more they are not stacked. Unused volume above the upper stair and below the lower stair needs to be minimized. 

In both apartments, landings overlap the corridor, the length of which is determined by the width of the staircase plus the width of the openings to access the living area in the lower apartment. The living area in the upper apartment is accessed from the half landing.

Both living areas are divided by staircases but the spaces above and below are returned to the volumes of their respective living areas.  Bedrooms are treated as equivalent chambers attached to the shared living space and do not imply any particular type of occupancy.
