The Dispersed Apartment
Inspired by the architecture of Riken Yamamoto, this is the project Even Better Apartment but with open internal corridors bridging the shared access corridor. The logic is to provide residents with more opportunities to not necessarily interact but more opportunities to be aware that they share the building with others, and that it is by default a community. This awareness could be further fostered by increasing the width of the bridges by about one metre so that a variety of other uses in addition to circulation are possible.
Only minimal railings are provided but, over time, residents will find add, change or adapt. Hopefully many will not see the need for alterations that restrict visibility, airflow and daylight.
Although such an arrangement may be less suitable for families, it may prove more suitable for non-traditional households, students and flatshares.
